Note: Giovanni "Nino" Petrarca
Giovanni Petrarca Giovanni (Nino) Petrarca, 80, of Akron, passed into eternal life on September 29, 2011. He was born in San Pietro Avellana, Italy, on August 3, 1931, to Michele and Domenica Petrarca. During World War II, his town was destroyed and his family relocated to Carovilli. As a young man, Giovanni served in the Italian Army in the rank of Sergeant. He was a skilled carpenter and during hard economic times in Italy, found work elsewhere, working in Switzerland and Germany for several years. In 1970, Giovanni and his family immigrated to the United States to be near his sister and family and to seek better opportunities. At 39 years of age, he and his wife worked hard to learn new skills and to assimilate in this new country. Giovanni was very proud of his children's achievements and loved his grandchildren beyond measure. He valued his Italian traditions and traveled to Italy with his family on several occasions. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the Carovillese Society, where he was recognized in 1980 for his service and contribution. He retired after 26 years of service from the Summit County Engineer's Office. Giovanni was fortunate to have made many close and long-lasting friendships throughout the years. He will be remembered for his charismatic personality, love of family, and great strength, determination, and courage. Preceded in death by his daughter, Silvana; sisters, Maria (Rodolfo) Fiocca and Vittorina; Giovanni will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 50 years, Eva; daughter, Vittorina; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Nicole; grandchildren, Jordan, Alexandra, Mia and Ava; nieces, Josephine (Mark) Hansel, Lucy (Hal) Bowers, Florence (John) Fiehn; nephew, Anthony Fiocca; great-nieces and great-nephews and many loving relatives and friends in Italy. There will be no calling hours. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 83 Mosser Place, Akron, on Monday, October 3 at 9:30 a.m. Entombment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Akron. ``it broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn't go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home'
