I am very sorry to hear of the death of Tonino Sardella. Tonino was the son of Irma DiMuzio, who was the sister of my maternal grandfather Amico James DiMuzio of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. In the summer of 1976 I travelled to Europe following my graduation from college. My grandfather agreed to travel to Italy and to meet me in Rome. We arranged to meet at the train station, but because of an earthquake my train was delayed several days. When I arrived in Rome I did not know where to find him, but I remembered that my grandfather was staying at the home of a gentleman named Tonino Sardella who lived, I believe, on Mont del Gallo. I took a taxi to the area and found my grandfather, who was very worried for me. We stayed for one week with Mr. Sardella and his lovely wife Luisa. Tonino was a taxi driver and each day he toured us around the beautiful city. His taxi was a Fiat and he drove quite fast. One day he took us to Ostia to see the fishermen. Each day Luisa would greet us on our return with a wonderful meal of pasta, lamb and fresh vegetables from the market. I seem to recall that Tonino was a great marksman. It was many years ago, but I remember much of it like it was yesterday.

My grandfather's son Joseph and his daughter Delia both passed away recently. My mother, who is 83, is doing well but she has dementia. As you say, this is life. Thank you for contacting me and give my best to Luisa.

email from Alfonso diSanza d'Alena, Apr 2013: "Toto, as we called Tonino, is my uncle, cousin of my mother. My grandmother Venusta and his mother Irma were sisters. I knew about his death on Saturday 31 and suddenly I and my sisters Lida and Annarita, went in Rome in Luisa's home (via Monte del Gallo, 55). Unfortunately, because of Toto died while he was in his garage, he was carried away in Gemelli Hospital (not at home) where he remained until yesterday morning. In the afternoon he arrived in his father's town, Pietracupa to be buried in the local cemetery. I was there with my wife, sisters and nephews. We all were very fond of him. In particular he represented for me an example. Everybody remember his humanity, availaility and goodness. He was still a marksman: Rome's rifle range has been closed yestarday in sign of mourning and the flags on hit at half-mast. I and my wife Maria Rosaria with our children Giuseppe and Carlo went in Rome to find Toto and Luisa this summer: there were beatiful days."
