Nicholas Tartar, Pioneer Educator, Passes Sunday

Nicholas Tartar, 87, professor emeritus of Oregon State college, member of a prominent Oregon family and native of the state who spent much of his early life in Polk county, passed away Sunday at Corvallis.

He was born January 7, 1856, at Airlie, the third in a family of nine children. His father was Robert Tartar, a native of Virginia, and his mother Susan Estes, a native of Tennessee, and they come to Oregon in 1852. The old home in Polk county where they and their family lived after coming to Oregon was one of those embraced in the area taken over by the government for Camp Adair, and included the house whose timbers were hand hewed and kiln dried, some of them handgrooved by Robert Tartar. The house was razed to make way for the military establishment.

Nickolas Tartar taught a total of 55 years, 54 of them consecutively. He taught his first school when 18 years old, a 5-months term in the Montgomery school near Airlie, and then a tuition school for three months in his father's home.

For a number of years he combined teaching and farming in the Luckiamute valley. In 1900 he took a position in the Corvallis public schools and in 1904 became a professor of mathematics in Oregon State college, a position in which he served full time for 28 years and part time for two years. At the age of 76 he carried a full college teaching load.

Mr. Tartar entered old Corvallis college in 1875. It was then a Methodist institution, but later became Oregon Agricultural college and then Oregon State college. He was a student there two years and also studied at La Creole academy in Dallas where Charles E. Wolverton, later member of the state supreme court and federal judge, and Charles A. Johns, who also became a supreme court justice, were among his teachers. He and Alcida Johnson, who later became his wife, attended the academy at the same time. They were married in 1878 and observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1928. Mrs. Tartar died in 1938. Her parents were pioneers of 1845 and 1852 respectively.

Professor Tartar is survived by four children, Dr. H. V. Tarter of Seattle, Miss Lena Belle Tartar of Salem, A.R. Tartar of Salem, and Dr. N. L. Tartar of Corvallis; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Tartar of Airlie and two sisters, Mrs. C. E. Staats and Dallas and Mrs. Laura Wiseman of Walla Walla, Wn.

He was a member of the Presbyterian church. The funeral Service was held Tuesday at 1:30 from the Mayflower chapel at Corvallis. The ministers were Dr. D.V. Poling and Dr. Simmons of the Federated church of Corvallis.

This is a combination of oral family history and a letter written by Gideon Kennedy, the youngest of Hugh and Ruth Babcock Kennedy's children, in 1891. In a response to a letter from Francis Kennedy, a grandson of Ebenezar Kennedy, Gideon wrote, "My mother (Ruth Babcock) was born in Dartmouth, Rhode Island and she had one brother, John Babcock, and two sisters: Nancy who married a man named Phillips, and Amy who married a man named Amy" (This could be a copying mistake). My grandfather (unnamed) Kennedy came from Ireland, there must have been 2 brothers came over, for my father had a cousin , Robert in Saratoga County, New York. He died of cancer. Your grandfather Ebenezar was the only uncle on my father's side that I remember and one sister that I know of - Aunt Nancy. She married a man by the name of Mortimer Vandoozer in Columbia County, New York. She had one son that I know of. They lived at Chatham Four Courners. That is the last I knew of them." From family history we learn: Hugh, Gideon, and Ebenezar Kennedy were born and reared in Dublin, Ireland. They left for America as young men and located in Rennselaer County, New York at the turn of the 19th Century. Hugh was born Janurary 13, 1779 and he married Ruth Babcock on June 21, 1805. She was born in born in Dartmouth, Rhode Island, on June 21, 1805. They had 11 children all born in Rennselaer County near Albany. They had hard times in the East during the 1830's so in 1838 Hugh took his wife and 10 remaining children to the Illinois prairie. Lewis, the oldest child had just died on August 30, 1838 and was buried in New York. Hugh bought a claim in Bristol Township, then part of Kane County, now Kendall County. He died a year later in 1839 and was buried but later his body was removed to Oak Grove Cemetery in Bristol.

Sarah Kirby (I1663) [Female] b. 1750
Darryl,

I looked at the Thru-Lines for Sally after I added Robert Kirby and Abigail Allen
as the parents of Ruth Kirby (1755-).

There was one additional ThruLine connection. A descendant of Sarah Kirby (1750-) who
might be a sister of Ruth Kirby.

I had added the four children of Robert and Abigail based on the Kirby document
that you sent me a while back. I added Abigail (1747-), Elizabeth(1747-), Sarah (1750-) and
Phoebe (1754-).

The person who showed up is "kthy_kch" and she matches Sally with 10cM. I can see
that she also matches you (yrkpope) and Diane Parks so you should be able to see
that on your Thru-Lines.

I have not found any other connection that Sally might have to the Almy family.

Sally's only shared match with kthy is "Chris Wiedemann" at 24 cM.

Kthy is the only match under Sarah Kirby

Sally's brother Robert does not match with kthy.

At this point, I think the evidence is just not there. It is more difficult
when the cM connection value gets so low.

Her father's name is William F. Martin (1888-1965) and her mother's name is Zelda Elizabeth Sides (1891-1967). If we are connected, it would be through Geraldine and her father William Martin. The Clarno Era by Arthur H. Campbell.

1901 7 Sep obituary of grandson, William H. Clarno in the Orangeville, Courier, "His paternal grandfather, a native of France, imigrated to America early in life and settled in Virginia."

Following written by Newell B. Clarno, Jr.
https://www.ancestry.com/account/profile/055e280c-0006-0000-0000-000000000000?compareToTestId=9F91D2E8-0B4B-4E7B-A0CD-2747BFA0EF5D

I have been interested in family history for many, many years, and now wish that I had a least written down some of the stories that I have heard, along with asking additional questions. It wasn't until we had moved to Central Oregon that I began to look into some of the stories and began researching some of my ancestry.

There are several stories on now the Clarno Line arrived in America, along with several spelling of Clarno. Clarneau, which is used by some of Clarno's is one of the may spellings. In addition to Clarneau, Edward W. Clarno has recorded the following spellings: Claro, Clarns, Clermoe, Clarnow, Clarvoe, and Clarnvo. He has also found a "John Clarvo" who signed the Oath of Fidelity in 1788 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. I ask is the "v" acutely an "n"?

The first story that I have heard concerning the Clarno arrival in America proclaims that there was two brothers, one of which may have had the first name of John, had a very large estate in France, and had committed some crime, which was punishable by death and somehow they had managed to escape to America. It is told that this estate would be given back to any Clarno who would be willing to go back to France and receive the punishment, death.

'Another Story' "proclaims that John Clarno left France, traveled by ship to Canada, and then to the Chesapeake Bay area on the east coast of America. The trip was followed by an incident which occurred as he was traveling across the Bay. He was a watchmaker by trade and brought his inventory of fine watches with him on his voyage to America. The ship was almost ashore when is caught fire. John stuffed his pockets with his watches, but, to his dismay, the weight was too great for him to swim, so he dropped his inventory of watches into the Bay. If true, this incident may have influenced him to become a farmer after he arrived in Virginia, or at least to change his profession in the new world.

Another story reveals that John was a sailor in the French Navy and jumped ship during a port of call in the Chesapeake Bay. Still another story indicates John left France and settled in Atlanta, Georgia area where the French Huguenots settled in large numbers. One descendant reports that John and Mary Clarvoe were listed in tax records from the state of Virginia for the year of 1790, and there were two children, John and William." From HERITAGE OF THE CLARNO FAMILIES NOW LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES, written by Edward W. Clarno.

None of these stories has any substantiation, but have been passed down from family to family.
Basically the Clarno Family has been traced back to John Clarno, born around 1770, presumably in France, who married Mary around 1789 and had the following children: William George Clarno, born June 30, 1793 in Virginia, Andrew Clarno, born 1798, Polly Elizabeth, born 1806, and Lovian, born 1810. John died in 1815, and Mary then married Stephen T. Logan.

William George Clarno married Sarah (Sally) Whitman, April 10, 1817 and had the following children: Andrew D. Clarno, born around 1820 in Ohio, George W. Clarno, born December 17, 1824 in Madison Co., Ohio, William Henry Clarno, Francis Clarno, Nancy Jane Clarno, and Ester Clarno. William George died September 23, 1833 at Hittle Grove, Ill and is buried at Hittle Grove Cemetery. After William's death, Sarah married Charles F. Ewing, July 20, 1848 in Tazwell Co., Ill.

George W. Clarno married Melinda Leach (born September 18, 1833 in Ill) and had the following children: George Washington Clarno, born February 28,1850, Tazewell Co., Illinois, Melissa, born October 27, 1851, Henry Lawence, born September 8, 1855, in Tazewell Co, Ill., Eliza A., born 1855, Francis (Frank) W., born January 15, 1860 in Colwell Co., Ohio, Sarah, born December 26, 1861, William M., born Feb (or Ded) 1864, in California, Annie (Anna) E., born January 4, 1866, and Mary E., born December 6,1868. Melinda died March 26, 1870 at Smith River, Ca, and is buried at the Smith River Cemetery. George W. when married Mary Frances Engleman, born January 1, 1855 in Shasta Co., Ca. They had the following children: Lucinda, born June, 17, 1876 at Smith River, Ca., Andrew J., born March 2, 1876, Smith River, Ca., Albert B., born January 2, 1878, Pistol River, Or., Oliver Perry (H.P.), born April 21, 1881, Pistol River, and an infant Girl, born May 2, 1885, Pistol River Or. George W. died August 1, 1911, Central Point, Jackson Co., Oregon and is buried at 100F Cemetery, Central Point, Or., in Block 187.
