1936 Dec 27 letter from Louis LaMere to Carola Martin Kennedy. Sent from San Diego. He was 77y (b 1859). The letter is hard to read but Louis sends his sympathy for what has happened to Eva. That is, her husband, Herman Pratt has left her. This letter is 30 years after Eva and Louis divorced (requested by Louis after Eva ran off to Northport where it was reported she ran a boardinghouse. They lived in Medical Lake, WA). Divorce requested about 22 Nov 1905, granted by the Washington Supreme Court about 23 Jan 1906.

Ann Leonard (I176) [Female] b. 1817 - d. 8 Dec 1894 NC
From the book "Lincoln County Heritage 1997", article by Madge H. Philbeck:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"We know very little about the early history of our family. Members of the family were told that Aaron Goins and his brother Wiley came from Virginia (no proof).

The Marriage Bonds of Old Tyron-Lincoln Counties North Carolina by Bynum, tells us that a marriage bond filed for Arren Goings (Goins) and Ann Leonard with Elisha W. Roderick and M. W. Abernethy, witness, dated 10 Jan 1837.

The 1850 census lists Oran Goin, laborer, age 34; Anna, age 33 and Philip, age 8.

According to a great Aunt, Aaron lived in the "Old Beam House" and was killed by a tree while clearing a new ground. Ann died about 1894, the daughter of Jacob Leonard.""

Leaving my grandfather, his siblings, and Lester on their own ...... and it was Hard. Then years to come.....my biological mother took off leaving my father to raise us 4 kids ......... then .... my oldest sister took off with a traveling salesman from Texas, leaving her 2 children and husband. 1906 custody by grandmother, Johanna Ditter Duhrkoop folliwing a court rulling against William Franzenbach Sr. See articles from the Oregonian.

Morning Oregonian. (Portland, Or.) 1861-1937, June 15, 1906, Page 11
CONTEST FOR THE CHILD.
Grandmother and Father Want Custody of Little Boy.
Some Interesting evidence was Introduced on both sides in the hearing of the petition of Mrs. Johanna Duhrkoop, for the adoption of her grandson, William Franzenbach. Jr., which Is being contested by the father of the child, before Judge Webster, of the Multnomah County Court. The petition was tried, argued and submitted yesterday afternoon and taken under advisement by the court until 8 o'clock Saturday morning. Mrs. Marie Franzenbach, the mother of the child, who is now 4 years old, was the daughter of the petitioner. On July 7, 1905, she procured a divorce from the husband and father, William Franzenbach, in a decree granted by Judge George, which carried with it the custody of the child. The mother was ill of consumption at the time, and her mother, the petitioner, sent her twice to Arizona, for her health. She died at Los Angeles, in February of the present year. Mrs. Duhrkoop has had possession of the child for the past two years, and, it is alleged in the petition. has spent $400 in his keeping. In her testimony before the court yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Duhrkoop stated that the husband and father, who is seeking possession of the child, was repeatedly requested to assist in paying the doctor's bills and funeral expenses of his wife, but he repeatedly refused to assist. and, upon one occasion, he is alleged to have said that he "would go to Jail first." It was also shown, according to the testimony of Franzenbach. that he had been employed by the Blaesing Granite Company for the past three years, and had saved $50 a month, and he represents that he now has enough to support himself and child for one year without having to work any more.

email from Sandy Stein, Mar 2013: "At age 8 he was in Bandon, Oregon and staying as a boarder with an elderly couple. One local researcher, found that Johanna was not pleased with the care the boy was receiving, probably now that his mother (Marie) had passed, which is why she wanted custody. She spent much in resources trying to get the boy back to health."

1910 census, 8y, Bandon, Coos, OR. Living with Theodore Neuhaus, 76y (1834), shoemaker, imm 1882. and his wife, Mary, 62y (1848). Both married twice, this marriage 7 years. This looks like a foster parent relationship. NOTE: possible NY arrival 4 Nov 1863, August Theodor Newhauser, 31y, butcher.

NOTE: 1900 census Theodor Neuhaus, 67y, Sep 1832 Germany, divorced, Baker, Baker, OR, wood chopper, imm 1882.

1910 Dec 31 article in the World, Coos Bay, OR. "Son is Ill - Wm. Franzenbach and wife left today with their son, William, for Portland and from there will go to the springs in hopes of securing relief for their son who has been suffering severely from spinal trouble. Mr. Franzenbach says about forty children at Bandon have been afflicted with the disease which is a puzzler to the local physicians."

1910 Dec 31 article in the World, Coos Bay, OR. Steamship sailing for Portland. On board is "Wm. Franzenbach, Master Franzenbach, Miss Koontz". Could Miss Koontz be the "wife" mentiioned in the accompanying 1910 Dec 31 article?

1917 may 26, filing of probate for Theodore Neuhus, The World, Coos Bay Oregon. Most likely, his death ended the foster parenting of Theodor and Mary with William Jr going back to living with his grandmother, Johanna Duhrkoo.

1920 Census, 17y, Portland, OR, living with grandmother, Johana Ritter Duhrkoop.

email from Mary Robinson Kelly, Sep 2011: "In doing research on my own family, I found your William Franzenbach living with Theodor Neuhaus/Neuhauser in the 1910 census. He was eight years of age. Do you know if they were related? Theo was a shoemaker who had divorced from my gg grandmother and remarried in Oregon. Our family is buried in Mt Hope Cemetery there. The 1920 census shows him living with his grandmother Johana Durhkoop."

2011 obituary of son, William Franzenbach, III.

Bette Clarno wrote " I don't know when Bill's father died. I only heard about him when I was growing up in the 20's and 30's. He was known as "little Willie" in our family, because of his hump-back....well, also because he was the son of Willie Franzenbach, Sr., who was my Grandmother's brother. The story of how Willie and his wife , and horse and buggy, disappeared in Bandon, OR was lengendary in our family. Little Willie was left, and the story went on from there"

email from grandson, William Franzenbach, IV: "It is true my grandfather was a hunchback and apparent if anyone has seen pictures of him. Just to add a little information about my grandfather, he was cremated and my father and I rented a boat in the spring of '79 and scattered his ashes in the Willamette River in Oregon City, OR where my grandfather would dock his boat and fish near the Oregon City Bridge. My grandfather also owned his own Automotive repair shop in Sellwood, a District in Portland, at one time."

2005 email from Dee Jordan to Bette Baker Clarno: "Dear Bette, I am William Franzenbach's half sister, Dee. My brother sent a copy of your letter to my sister Gail in Viola, KS and she sent a copy to me. Sence I am trying to track our family history and I have a computer, she thought I could e-mail you and maybe we could be of help to each other. My Mother, Edith Adalaid Dobbs was married to my brother Bill's Father. I never met Bill's dad. What little I know I have learned from Bill. Bill has two daughters and a son. Bill is now about 71 years old and lives near where we were all brought up, in california. Our mother was brought up in the state of Washington & Oregon. My dad met her at a logging camp, I think. Its been very hard to track anything with our family as anyone who could tell us much is dead now. How on earth did you find the 1910 census for Brandon, OR? I need to find the 1910 census for Chehalis County, WA and don't have any idea how to find it. Thats all for now. My e-mail address is adnapsart@bwtelcom.net I hope to get an answer. Dee Jordan"
